Luxembourg Sandstone Formation, Geological formation near the eastern margin of the Paris Basin, Luxembourg
The Luxembourg Sandstone Formation is a geological layer in south-central Luxembourg composed of alternating bands of coarse to fine-grained sandstone. These layers are interspersed with mudstones and siltstones that shape the regional geology.
The formation developed during the Early Jurassic period roughly 201 to 191 million years ago, when shallow seas covered much of Luxembourg. The sandstone deposits accumulated from sediments laid down in these ancient marine environments.
Luxembourg Sandstone Formation contains numerous fossils including Ichthyosaurus communis, Temnodontosaurus, and various gastropod species that document ancient life forms.
The formation lies both at the surface and at depth where it holds abundant water that people rely on. It is not directly visible to visitors since it sits underground, but its effects are felt throughout the region.
The layers contain fossils of marine animals such as ichthyosaurs and various snail species from ancient times. These petrified remains reveal how diverse life was in the old seas.
