Villa Vauban

Villa Vauban is an art museum housed in a classical building from the 19th century, displaying European works spanning from the 17th to the 21st century. Inside you will find Dutch Golden Age paintings, French artworks, and other collections spread across several floors.

The building was constructed in 1873 as a private residence on land that once held a fortress. This fortress was part of the defensive structures built during a period of military occupation and control.

The rooms inside hold Dutch masterpieces alongside French works, showing how artists across Europe influenced one another. You can see here how painting and artistic ideas traveled across borders and changed over centuries.

The museum sits in a park and is easy to reach on foot, with clear signs pointing to the entrance. The galleries spread across multiple floors, so comfortable shoes are recommended for your visit.

In the basement of the museum, visitors can still see a section of the original fortress wall preserved underneath the building. This visible remnant connects the modern art space to the older military history of the city.
