Daugavpils St Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Chapel, Eastern Orthodox chapel in Daugavpils, Latvia
St Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Chapel is a wooden building made of stacked logs with a four-sided roof covered in diamond-patterned metal sheets. It features nine towers of different shapes, several topped with onion-like domes and crosses.
The chapel was built in 1856 and stands where an earlier cathedral once served the Orthodox community. The original cathedral was removed decades later, but this wooden structure has endured.
Stone carvings on the chapel depict the 1905 uprising and the hardships people faced during wars and conflicts. These reliefs tell stories of key moments that shaped the local community.
The chapel is located in A. Pumpurs public garden near Saules Street, making it easy to find and visit. The surroundings include walking paths, and visitors can view the building from the outside and explore the area.
Each of the nine towers displays a different design, from varying cupola shapes to distinct cross styles, making them individual focal points rather than simple repetitions. This variety in tower design makes the wooden chapel visually engaging and memorable.
