Unity House, theatre and house of culture in Daugavpils, Latvia
Unity House is a cultural venue with a theatre hall, exhibition spaces, and event rooms in central Daugavpils. The building combines functional design with decorative elements such as columns and contains spaces of varying sizes suitable for concerts, theatrical performances, workshops, and community gatherings.
Built in 1936-1937 during Latvia's early independence period, it was among the most advanced cultural facilities in Europe at the time. The government supported its construction, and architect Verners Vitands designed it to blend modern functionality with traditional architectural forms.
The name reflects its purpose of bringing together people from different backgrounds as a unified community. Today it hosts concerts, theatrical performances, and local celebrations that keep regional traditions alive and showcase various forms of artistic expression.
The building sits on central Rigas Street and is easily accessible from the city center. Visitors can attend theatre performances and concerts, find a tourist information point, browse the library, enjoy the café, or visit the fitness centre all within the same location.
When it opened, the building featured a concert hall for 300 people alongside a smaller hall for 30, making it adaptable for different event sizes. This dual-hall setup allowed it to host intimate workshops and large performances simultaneously.
