Daugavpils Synagogue, synagogue in Daugavpils
Daugavpils Synagogue is a 19th-century building in Empire style located at the corner of Lacplesa and Cietoksna Streets in the city center. It has solid stone walls with clean lines and two facades facing the surrounding streets.
The synagogue was built around 1850 and served as a center for Daugavpils' Jewish community for many decades. After suffering damage during the Second World War, it was restored in 2005 with financial support from the family of artist Mark Rothko, who was born in the city.
The synagogue was once the spiritual heart of Daugavpils' Jewish community. Visitors today can see photographs, documents, and everyday objects in the second-floor museum that show how families celebrated holidays, observed traditions, and marked important moments over generations.
To visit, arrange in advance since the building is not always open to the public. Guided tours can be arranged with a local historian who shares stories about the Jewish families and their traditions that connect to the space.
The 2005 restoration was partly funded by donations from Mark Rothko's family, the famous artist born in Daugavpils in 1903. This connection links the fate of a local Jewish family to the story of modern art in an unexpected way.
