Biķernieki Memorial, Holocaust memorial in Biķernieki Forest, Latvia.
The Biķernieki Memorial is a Holocaust monument set in a forest on the outskirts of Riga, built on one of the largest mass shooting sites in the Baltic region. A black granite cube stands at its center, surrounded by rows of smaller granite stones arranged in a pattern that resembles a cemetery.
During the German occupation from 1941 to 1944, this forest was used as a mass execution site for Jews from Latvia and Western Europe, Soviet prisoners of war, and political detainees. Decades after independence was restored, Latvia and several other European countries together created this memorial on the site.
Stone markers throughout the grounds name the European cities from which victims were brought, including Hamburg, Vienna, and Amsterdam. Walking through the site, visitors often realize that what happened here touched communities across an entire continent.
The memorial sits in a forested area outside Riga city center and is reachable by public transport. Paths run through the woods and can be wet after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
The central monument brings together three religious symbols, the Star of David, a crown of thorns, and a cross, each representing one of the main groups who died here. Few memorials in the region bring Jewish and Christian symbols together on a single structure in this way.
