Jacob's Barracks, Military barracks complex in Old Town, Latvia.
Jacob's Barracks comprises three connected yellow buildings with orange tile roofs stretching along Torna Street for about 230 meters. The ground and basement levels now house numerous shops, restaurants, travel agencies, and service businesses that bring daily life to the historic complex.
Built originally in the late 1600s to house Swedish soldiers, the barracks were reconstructed in stone during the 1700s following orders from Peter the First. This rebuilding marked the shift between two ruling periods in Riga's history.
The coats of arms displayed on the restored buildings represent different Latvian cities and reflect how the complex once served as a meeting point for regional representatives. Visitors walking through can observe these symbols and understand the place's role in connecting various parts of the country.
The site is easily accessible and centrally located in Old Town, with multiple entrances to explore at your own pace. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the cobblestone streets are uneven and you will be moving on foot through the complex and surrounding neighborhoods.
Many visitors overlook the vaulted passageways beneath the buildings that once served as underground connections linking different military positions. These hidden corridors reveal the former strategic importance of the complex in Riga's defensive network.
