Vērmanes Garden, Public park in Central District, Latvia
Vērmanes Garden is a 5-hectare park in central Riga with numerous walking paths, wooden benches, and seasonal flower displays throughout the grounds. The maintained lawns and green areas create a calm environment within the city center.
The park was established in 1817 through donations from Anna Gertrud Vērmane and is the second oldest public recreation space in Riga. An original monument was removed during World War II and was recreated as a granite obelisk in 2000.
The open-air stage on Elizabetes Street hosts concerts, chess tournaments, and dance performances during warmer months. This space draws locals and visitors together to enjoy live music and performances in a communal setting.
The park can be accessed from four surrounding streets: Tērbatas, Elizabetes, Krišjāņa Barona, and Merķeļa, each with multiple entry points. The various entrances allow visitors to easily navigate through the space or cross from one side to another.
The park contains a granite obelisk reconstructed in 2000 that replaces the original monument from 1829. This memorial tells an important story of loss and restoration during and after wartime.
