Vērmanes Garden, Public park in Central District, Latvia
Vērmanes Garden is a park in the Central District of Riga, Latvia, laid out with walking paths, wooden benches, and flower beds that change with the seasons. It sits within a city block bounded by four streets and includes a small open-air stage near the Elizabetes Street side.
The garden was created in 1817 thanks to a donation from Anna Gertrud Vērmane, a wealthy merchant's widow, making it the second oldest public green space in Riga. The original monument erected shortly after the founding was destroyed during the Second World War.
The open-air stage on Elizabetes Street draws people together for concerts, dance performances, and chess tournaments during the warmer months. The stage gives the park a social side that locals return to regularly throughout summer.
The park has entry points on all four surrounding streets, so it is easy to enter from whichever direction you are coming from. A visit during spring or summer is rewarding, as the flower beds are at their best and the open-air stage is in use.
The granite obelisk now standing in the park is a reconstruction from 2000, built to replace the original stone that was put up in 1829 and lost during the war. The gap between the two versions spans more than half a century, giving the monument an unusual double history.
