Sietiņiezis, Protected sandstone cliff in Vaidava Parish, Latvia.
Sietiņiezis is a sandstone cliff along the right bank of the Gauja River that stretches for a considerable distance. The formation rises roughly 15 meters above water level and displays varied layers of sandstone throughout its length.
The cliff received its name from numerous holes carved by bees over centuries, creating a sieve-like pattern across the sandstone surface. This distinctive texture continues to mark the formation today.
The geological monument serves as an educational site where students and researchers study the formation processes of Latvian sandstone structures.
The site is accessible via marked trails between Valmiera and Jāņmuiža, making navigation straightforward for most visitors. Designated areas along the Gauja riverbank provide good spots for viewing and spending time.
The northern section displays small erosion-formed caves, gullies, and sandstone columns where the river makes a natural bend. This curved turn creates a memorable bend in the landscape that many visitors overlook.
