Piejūra Nature Park, Nature park and Natura 2000 protected area near Riga, Latvia
Piejūra Nature Park is a protected area along the Gulf of Riga covering about 4,180 hectares and characterized by coastal dunes, gray dunes, and boreal forest. The land stretches for over 36 kilometers and connects various habitats into one continuous natural area.
The protected area was established in 1964 to safeguard coastal ecosystems after sand dunes had been stabilized through forestry efforts in the late 1800s. These conservation measures secure a habitat that developed over many generations.
The protected area demonstrates how Latvia's coastal nature is shaped across distinct zones, with walking trails leading visitors through different landscape types. Information stations along the routes explain which plants and animals live in each of these varied environments.
The area has several entry points and marked walking paths where you can explore different sections on your own. The best time to visit is from spring through fall when the trails are dry and easy to walk.
Within the area lie two lakes, Ummis and Dziļcaurums, that formed thousands of years ago when ancient seas retreated from the region. These lakes offer a view into a distant past of Latvia's coast.
