AB dambis, Levee in Klīversala district, Riga, Latvia
AB dambis is a levee running alongside the Daugava River near central Riga that protects the surrounding area from flooding. The structure stretches for several hundred meters and serves both as a protective wall and as a public space where people can walk and spend time.
The levee was built in the late 1800s to stabilize the riverbank and prevent flooding in the city. After being destroyed during a major war, it was rebuilt in the 1950s and has served as important infrastructure ever since.
The levee displays a large Latvian flag on a prominent mast that commemorates the nation's independence milestone. People gather here to experience this patriotic symbol overlooking the river.
The location is easy to reach on foot and makes for a pleasant walk, especially on nice days. The levee provides plenty of room to stroll along and observe the river landscape.
The levee carried a different name between 1986 and 1989 before receiving its current designation. This earlier name is rarely remembered by visitors who use this space today.
