Jemaa el-Fnaa, Traditional square and marketplace in Marrakesh, Morocco

The expansive Jemaa el-Fnaa functions as the central gathering point of Marrakesh, filled with vendors, performers, and food stalls throughout the day and night.

Founded during the Almoravid dynasty in 1070, the square initially served as a temporary market space known as Rahbat al-Ksar before evolving into its current form.

Local storytellers, musicians, and dancers maintain ancient Moroccan traditions in the square, contributing to its recognition as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2001.

Numerous food stalls emerge at dusk, transforming the square into an open-air dining area where visitors can experience traditional Moroccan dishes and mint tea.

The name Jemaa el-Fnaa translates to either gathering area or assembly of the dead, referencing a destroyed mosque that once stood in this location.

Guaranteed change of scenery in this mythical square of Marrakech! In the evening, many food stalls set up here.
