Amgala

Amgala is an oasis in the northern section of Western Sahara positioned between Tifariti and Smara. Water sources at this location support plant and animal life in an otherwise dry landscape.

The location experienced military conflicts between Moroccan forces and the Polisario Front during the 1970s and 1980s. These confrontations marked an important period in the region's past.

The oasis served as a gathering place where nomadic groups met and exchanged goods while crossing the desert. This meeting point shaped local social patterns for generations.

Reaching this remote location requires special permits and vehicles equipped for desert travel. Bringing plenty of water and supplies is necessary for such a challenging journey.

The water source attracts diverse desert wildlife and allows unusual plant growth in one of the driest regions on Earth. This concentration of life makes it a distinct ecosystem within the wider desert.
