Playa de Sotavento de Jandía, Beach and windsurfing spot in Fuerteventura, Spain.
Playa de Sotavento de Jandía is a nine-kilometer stretch of white sand with shallow, clear water extending from the shore. At low tide, a natural lagoon forms, while high tide returns the space to a traditional beach configuration.
International windsurfing championships have been held here since the 1980s, making this location known to athletes worldwide. These competitions established the beach as a premier destination for the sport.
The five connected beaches—La Barca, Risco del Paso, Mirador, Los Canarios, and Malnombre—serve different groups of visitors, from windsurfers seeking wind to those preferring more secluded areas. Each section has developed its own character through how people naturally use the space.
The René Egli water sports center offers year-round equipment rentals and lessons, with optimal wind conditions between May and September. Arriving early helps you experience the best conditions and see the lagoon at low tide.
At low tide, a lagoon system spanning about three kilometers forms, representing one of the largest tidal phenomena in the Canary Islands. This creates a different experience with each visit, depending on the timing of your arrival.

Fuerteventura, the second largest island in the Canary Islands, is characterized by its diverse landscapes and notable geological features. The island houses spectacular formations such as the white dunes of Corralejo Natural Park, extending over more than 10 kilometers, the 70-million-year-old Ajuy caves, and accessible volcanoes like Calderon Hondo with its 70-meter-deep crater. The coastline offers expansive beaches like the one in Cofete, 12 kilometers long and backed by the Jandía mountains, as well as Lobos Island, a volcanic nature reserve with black sand beaches. Beyond its natural assets, Fuerteventura offers cultural experiences such as the Grain Museum, which traces the island's agricultural history, and activities suitable for all ages with Oasis Park with 3,000 animals or Aqua Water Park in Corralejo. The island's climate allows visits year-round, with mild temperatures and ample sunshine promoting exploration of its natural parks, historical sites, and preserved coastline.
Spain has more than 8,000 kilometers of coastlines home to hundreds of beaches with diverse characteristics. The Mediterranean, Atlantic, Balearic Islands, and Canary Islands feature contrasting marine scenery: coves sheltered between cliffs, extensive sandy areas, urban beaches, and protected natural zones. Each coastal region has developed its own identity influenced by local geology and climate. The Balearic Islands include bays like Cala Macarella in Menorca or Ses Illetes in Formentera, where white sand contrasts with clear Mediterranean waters. The Canary Islands display volcanic landscapes, with the Maspalomas dunes on Gran Canaria stretching over 6 kilometers, or Lanzarote’s red cliffs framing Playa del Papagayo. Along the Andalusian coast, the Cabo de Gata Natural Park houses Mónsul Beach with its black volcanic formations, while Bolonia near Tarifa features a 4-kilometer-long beach with Roman remains. The northern coast presents a different scene: La Concha urban beach in San Sebastián forms a 1.5-kilometer arc, the limestone cliffs of Asturias protect Playa del Silencio, and the Cíes Islands in Galicia are part of a marine national park.
