Pico de la Zarza, Mountain summit in Las Palmas, Spain.
Pico de la Zarza reaches 813 meters and is the highest point on Fuerteventura island in Las Palmas province. The mountain has a distinctive conical shape, and from its summit you can see across the dry landscape that covers much of the island.
The mountain was a key landmark for the Mahos, the original inhabitants of Fuerteventura, who used it for navigation and orientation. After Spanish colonization arrived, the peak remained an important reference point for islanders, though its role changed over centuries.
The summit serves as a gathering point for hikers from across the island, who mark their passage through stone cairns left along the path. Over time, these markers have become part of the landscape itself, connecting visitors to the mountain in a personal way.
The hike is demanding and requires sturdy boots and plenty of water due to the dry, exposed terrain. Starting from Piedras Caídas, the round trip covers about 18.5 kilometers, so allow most of your day for the walk.
On clear days, you can spot three different Canary Islands from the summit: Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Lanzarote. This rare alignment of views makes the peak especially rewarding for photographers and those seeking wide horizons.
