El Ma’moura, Cork oak forest between Rabat and Kenitra, Morocco

El Ma'moura Forest extends over 133,000 hectares, forming a green plateau from the ocean to 80 kilometers inland between Rabat and Kenitra.

The forest management program started in 1919 after the first recorded presence of Gypsy Moths, leading to initiatives protecting the cork oak trees.

The forest supports 30,000 residents in surrounding communities who maintain traditional practices of farming and livestock management within the ecosystem.

Visitors access the forest through marked trails connecting to main roads from Rabat and Kenitra, with an ecomuseum providing educational resources.

El Ma'moura contains the largest concentration of cork oak trees globally, representing over fifty percent of Morocco's cork tree population.
