Borj Adoumoue

Borj Adoumoue is a stone bastion on the Bou Regreg river in Salé with a series of fortification structures. The structure displays bronze cannons and medieval masonry, with an interior space now used for cultural exhibitions.

The bastion was built in 1261 by Sultan Abu Yusuf Yaqub in response to threats from raiders. It underwent significant changes over the following centuries as military needs and political circumstances evolved.

The ceramics housed inside show traditional Moroccan craft techniques passed down through generations in this region. You can see how artisans applied their skills and how these pieces remain connected to daily life today.

The bastion is easy to reach on foot from central Salé, and the surrounding area has various restaurants and cafes nearby. Visit early in the morning when crowds are lighter and light conditions are better for photographs.

The interior of the bastion was expanded over time and now includes underground chambers that were not originally there. These hidden spaces show how the structure adapted to changing military requirements over the centuries.
