Enclosure of the Medina of Salé

The stone enclosure surrounds the entire old medina with high defensive walls featuring watchtowers, gates, and architectural elements from different periods.

Built during the medieval Almohad dynasty, these fortifications protected the city from maritime invasions while controlling trade through multiple strategic entry points.

The walls encompass a traditional medina where artisans maintain workshops in narrow streets, producing textiles, leather goods, and metalwork using centuries-old techniques.

Visitors can access the medina through several gates, with the main entrance near the Bab Bou Haja providing direct access to the central market area.

The fortification walls integrate with natural coastal defenses, incorporating cliffs and the Bou Regreg river into their defensive system.
