Tangier Cathedral

Tangier Cathedral is a modern place of worship with white walls, high ceilings, and large windows topped by a prominent tower that stands out against the city skyline. The interior opens up through glass surfaces that let in plenty of natural light and emphasize the sense of space.

Architect Luis Martinez-Feduchi designed this cathedral between 1953 and 1961, replacing an older Franciscan chapel that stood near the Spanish consulate. The project represented a shift toward modern architecture and moved away from religious building styles of earlier times.

The cathedral displays Spanish modernist design through geometric shapes and stained glass windows created by artist Arcadio Blasco. These windows shape how light fills the interior and create a distinct feeling when you enter the space.

The building is accessible to visitors and located in the city center, making it easy to reach and explore. The best time to visit is during daylight hours when natural light particularly highlights the interior spaces.

The crypt beneath the altar area holds the remains of Father Jose Maria Lerchundi, who spent thirty years as a missionary in Morocco. This quiet chamber tells the story of one person's commitment to the religious community in this region.
