Grand Socco, Historic market square in Tangier, Morocco
Grand Socco, officially named Place du Grand 9 Avril 1947, is a large open circular plaza in Tangier that connects the old medina to the newer part of the city. A marble fountain stands at the center, and the edges of the square open onto shops, cafes, and the main gate leading into the medina.
The square developed as a natural crossroads between the old medina and the new city center built during the colonial period. It was later renamed to honor the visit of Sultan Mohammed V, who gave a speech here in 1947 calling for Moroccan independence.
The square is a daily meeting point where locals sit at outdoor cafes and watch the flow of people passing between the old and new parts of the city. The mix of street vendors, taxi drivers, and families gathered around the fountain gives the place a lived-in, unhurried feel.
The square is a busy transport hub for taxis and local buses, so arriving on foot from nearby streets is often easier than by car. Early morning or late afternoon are good times to walk around without the midday crowds.
Just beside the square, in the Mendoubia Gardens, stands a large banyan tree estimated to be several centuries old. It was already there before the square took its current shape, making it one of the oldest living things in the city.
