Rabat Zoo, National zoo in Temara, Morocco.
Rabat Zoo is a 50-hectare facility south of the capital where animals live in recreated natural environments. The grounds are divided into five distinct zones that represent different ecosystems from Morocco and Africa.
The facility opened in 1969 and has remained a public place for viewing animals in the region. A major overhaul took place in 2012 when modern structures and improved animal habitats were built.
The zoo plays an important role in caring for endangered species like the Atlas Lion and Northern Bald Ibis that are part of Morocco's natural heritage. Visitors can observe how these animals are maintained and understand their place in the region's wildlife.
The zoo opens daily with hours that change seasonally and adjust during Ramadan. Wear comfortable shoes because the grounds are extensive and require plenty of walking to explore.
The zoo is one of the few places in Africa where you can see the endangered Northern Bald Ibis, which has become nearly extinct in the wild. These birds are part of an international rescue program that helps save the species from disappearing entirely.
