Chișinău Zoo

The zoo is a collection of animals from multiple continents, housing more than 1,000 individuals ranging from tigers and lions to zebras, bears, and numerous bird varieties. The grounds feature both expansive outdoor enclosures and smaller specialized areas designed to accommodate the different sizes and needs of each species.

The facility was founded in 1978 and has since become the primary institution for wildlife conservation and research in Moldova. Its establishment marked the beginning of organized animal care and protection efforts in the country.

The facility serves as a place where people can observe animals from distant regions and learn how different species fit into their natural worlds. The enclosures recreate habitats that help visitors understand the diversity of life across continents.

The grounds are large and best explored on foot, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended as paths wind through landscaped areas and uneven terrain. Arriving early in the day is advisable to see animals when they are most active, particularly during warmer months.

A central lake within the grounds is inhabited by wild ducks and swans that settle naturally on the water and small island throughout the year. This body of water adds an extra dimension to the visit, allowing guests to observe these water-dependent species and their behaviors in a semi-natural setting.
