Stephen the Great Monument, Bronze equestrian monument in central Chișinău, Moldova
The Stephen the Great Monument is a bronze equestrian statue located at the main entrance of Stefan cel Mare Park in downtown Chișinău. The figure depicts the ruler in royal robes and crown, mounted on horseback.
Designed by Alexandru Plămădeală and cast in Bucharest in 1927, the monument replaced an earlier one honoring Russian Emperor Alexander II. It has remained in place since then.
The name refers to Stephen the Great, one of the region's most important rulers. The monument has become a gathering place where locals and visitors reflect on the area's past.
The monument sits at the park entrance and is easy to locate while exploring downtown streets. The location is convenient to reach and well-connected by pathways.
The monument was moved multiple times between Romania and Moldova during World War II before reaching its final location in 1989. This journey reflects the region's turbulent past.
