Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi is a port city along the Bay of Kotor with stone houses spreading from the waterfront up into the hillside. The compact medieval core features narrow streets, several historic fortifications, and plazas that open toward the sea.

A fortress was founded in 1382 and grew into a major trading hub connecting inland routes with maritime networks. The city changed hands multiple times over the centuries, shaping its mixed architectural heritage.

The name derives from Herceg, a local noble title, and wandering through the narrow streets reveals a mix of Venetian loggias, Ottoman fountains, and Austro-Hungarian villas layered across centuries.

The climate is mild with rainy winters and warmer, drier summer months suitable for swimming and water activities. The hillside location means exploration often involves uphill walking, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

The Savina Monastery complex holds three separate churches built across different centuries, preserving religious objects and manuscripts dating back to the 17th century. This collection offers insight into the region's spiritual history, often overlooked by visitors.
