Plava špilja, Natural sea cave in Lustica peninsula, Montenegro.
Plava špilja is a sea cave on the Lustica peninsula with two entrances positioned at different angles, the larger one measuring approximately 15 meters wide and 3 meters high on the south-west side. The interior space opens up considerably and allows natural light to penetrate through these openings.
Fishermen discovered this sea cave in the late 1800s and recognized its value as a natural formation. It was eventually acknowledged as a natural monument of Montenegro.
The cave served as a shelter for fishing communities working these waters for generations, becoming deeply rooted in local maritime stories. People still recognize it as a place where seafarers once found refuge during their journeys.
Reaching this cave requires taking a boat from nearby coastal ports on or near the Lustica peninsula. The best time to visit is midday through late afternoon when light conditions inside are most favorable.
The afternoon sun hitting the water creates a striking blue reflection that fills the cave's interior with an intense color. This effect depends on the sun's angle and time of day, making certain hours particularly special.
