Serbian Orthodox church of St Nicolas in Kotor, Eastern Orthodox church in Stari Grad, Kotor, Montenegro.
The church of St Nicolas is an Eastern Orthodox church in Kotor's Old Town with two black onion domes topped with golden crosses and a central cupola rising above the medieval rooftops. The structure combines Byzantine and Balkan architectural traditions.
The current structure was completed in 1909 and replaced an earlier Orthodox church destroyed by a devastating fire on Christmas Eve 1896. The rebuilding represented an important sign of community recovery after this tragedy.
The interior iconostasis was created in 1908 by Czech painter Frantisek Ziegler and blends Czech with Russian artistic traditions. This style reflects the diverse religious community that gathered here.
The church sits on St Luke's Square in the northern part of the Old Town and remains open to visitors during the day. The square is easily accessible on foot from the main streets of the Old Town and offers a quiet spot to explore.
The church treasury holds a collection of silver items, from small candle holders to large chandeliers, donated by local maritime families. These objects tell the story of the deep connection between the church and the city's seafaring heritage.
