Vrmac Fortress, Military fortress in Kotor, Montenegro
Vrmac Fortress is a pentagonal structure positioned on the Vrmac ridge approximately 475 meters above sea level. The building contains three levels with limestone and concrete walls that command views over the Bay of Kotor and surrounding territories.
Construction took place between 1894 and 1897 under Austro-Hungarian control to defend the Bay of Kotor. The fortress remained militarily active until the end of World War I, after which its defensive role ended.
The fortress design reflects Austro-Hungarian military architecture with its reinforced structure, defensive caponiers, and strategic positioning overlooking multiple territories.
You can reach the site via a military road from Troica toward Gornja Lastva or by following a mountain path starting from the Muo district. Both routes require physical effort and take you through different types of terrain.
An extensive water cistern system fills the basement level, designed to supply the garrison during long sieges. The upper floors held artillery equipment including multiple heavy cannons positioned for defense.
