Fort Gorazda, Military fortress near Kotor, Montenegro.
Fort Gorazda is a fortification near Kotor built on a mountainside at 452 meters altitude with a three-tiered structure of stone and concrete. Two symmetrical wings connect to a circular central building, creating a compact defensive design.
The fort was built between 1884 and 1886 by the Austro-Hungarian military and replaced an earlier structure on the site. It served as a defensive position during World War I against Montenegrin forces.
The inscription 'Thurmfort Gorazda' above the main entrance shows Austro-Hungarian military design in the Bay of Kotor region. Walking through the fort, you notice how these architectural choices reflect the strategic thinking of that era.
The fort is accessible only by private transport since no public transit serves the location. The narrow mountain roads with sharp turns require careful driving, and clear weather makes the steep access easier.
The fort houses the last surviving 100-ton Gruson rotating turret in the world, mounted on its roof. This heavy artillery installation could turn 360 degrees and represented advanced weapons technology when first installed.
