Podmaine Monastery, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Budva, Montenegro
Podmaine Monastery comprises two churches constructed with pink and honey-colored stone that reflect different periods. The smaller church dates from the 15th century, while the larger structure was built in 1747.
The monastery was founded in 1401 by the Crnojević noble family and ranks among the oldest religious structures in the Budva region. It endured various conquests and transformations that shaped its present appearance.
The interior walls display religious frescoes, including a modern interpretation of the Last Judgment that incorporates contemporary figures. These paintings shape the spiritual experience when entering the churches and connect traditional Orthodox imagery to the present day.
The monastery sits on the coast and is easily reached on foot from the old town, with several paths for exploring the surroundings. The site connects via simple trails to nearby beaches and other religious locations.
Metropolitan Danilo I Petrović-Njegoš rested at the monastery in 1735 before his remains were later moved to Cetinje. This episode connects the site to a major figure in Serbian Orthodox Church history.
