Praskvica Monastery, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Čelobrdo, Montenegro.
Praskvica Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Čelobrdo, Montenegro, made up of two churches: a larger one dedicated to Saint Nicholas and a smaller one dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The complex also has a museum area where religious objects such as old manuscripts, liturgical vessels, and Orthodox icons are kept and displayed.
The monastery was founded in 1307, when King Stephen Uroš II Milutin issued a founding charter during a visit to the Kotor region. This makes it one of the oldest religious sites along the Montenegrin coast.
The monastery once served as a place where monks taught reading and writing to children from the surrounding Pastrovici region, at a time when formal schooling was rare. Today, visitors can see old manuscripts and liturgical objects displayed in the museum section of the complex.
The monastery sits on a hillside and is reached by a steep path, so sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are helpful. Weather can change quickly in the area, so bringing a warm or waterproof layer is a good idea, especially outside of summer.
A Russian monk spent ten years building a stone path by hand, about 3 kilometers long, linking the monastery to the sanctuary of Sveti Stefan. This path, known as Jegor's Road, can still be walked today.
