Stari Grad

Stari Grad is a fortified medieval settlement featuring narrow stone streets winding between old buildings and encircled by defensive walls. The site sits directly on the Adriatic coast with open views toward the water.

The settlement's roots stretch back over two millennia, and it was significantly reinforced during Venetian rule as defenses against outside threats. These fortification efforts shaped its layout and appearance for centuries to come.

The churches scattered throughout the old quarter display different architectural styles reflecting centuries of local traditions. People still gather here for worship and community events, making these spaces central to daily life.

The site is easily reached on foot and can be explored at a slow pace through the tight lanes, making sturdy footwear advisable. Summer days bring crowds and heat; visiting in early morning or late afternoon offers a more pleasant experience.

A powerful earthquake in the 1970s caused severe damage to the site, leaving only a handful of buildings unharmed. The reconstruction that followed helped preserve its structure while maintaining its historic character.
