Berovo Lake, artificial North Macedonian body of water
Berovo Lake is a reservoir in eastern North Macedonia surrounded by forests and mountains with calm, clean water. The shoreline features steep, overgrown banks where sunbathing spots are rare, though small beaches exist on the far side of the dam where shallow water allows easy wading from shore.
The reservoir was created in the 1970s by building a dam on the Bregalnica River. It rapidly became important for electricity generation and recreation, transforming into a valued destination for both residents and visitors.
The lake's name comes from the nearby town of Berovo. Local communities gather here for festivals featuring traditional music and regional foods, giving visitors a window into Macedonian customs. The adjacent monastery serves as a spiritual gathering place, especially during celebrations of the Virgin Mary throughout the year.
The lake sits about 7 kilometers from Berovo town center and is best reached by car or local bus. Roads wind peacefully through forests and mountains, with many visitors choosing to stay in nearby guesthouses or rent a car to explore the surrounding countryside at their own pace.
Local folklore tells of a guardian spirit dwelling in the lake that protects the area from harm. During certain full moon nights, visitors have reported seeing glowing lights above the water, adding a layer of mystery to this quiet place.
