St. Michael the Archangel Church, Kloster in Nordmazedonien
St. Michael the Archangel Church is a monastery in Berovo, North Macedonia, located at about 865 meters (2,835 feet) elevation. The original complex was built between 1815 and 1818, while an adjacent female monastery was added in 1940, with both structures being simple, solid stone buildings typical of 19th century construction.
The monastery was founded in 1815-1818 by the local community and the church was consecrated through the presence of Enlightener Joachim Krcovski, a significant religious figure in the region. In 1940, a female monastery was added, with the first nuns having close ties to the famous Rila Monastery in Bulgaria and receiving their monastic tonsure blessed by the Rila abbot.
The monastery is dedicated to the Holy Archangel Michael and remains central to religious life in Berovo. Nuns living here follow daily routines of prayer and simple work that visitors can observe while walking through the grounds.
The monastery sits just a short walk from Berovo's main square and is easy to reach on foot with calm surroundings and straightforward navigation. Visitors find the best conditions during daylight hours and can enjoy the quiet and fresh mountain air at their own pace.
The female monastery was founded in 1940 with its first nuns being family members of Friar Risto, a well-respected religious teacher from the area. This personal connection to the founding reveals how families and communities preserved their spiritual traditions across generations.
