Treskavec Monastery, Byzantine monastery on Mount Zlatovrv, Prilep, North Macedonia

Treskavec Monastery is a stone complex situated on a mountainside at approximately 1,280 meters (4,200 feet) in elevation. It includes the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin along with multiple connected structures that reflect Byzantine architectural traditions.

The monastery was founded in the 12th century and received significant expansions during the 14th century under Serbian kings Stefan Milutin and Stefan Dušan. Royal patronage brought major architectural developments and artistic enhancements to the site.

The monastery walls display frescoes spanning multiple centuries, showing how religious art evolved across different periods. These paintings reveal the spiritual beliefs and artistic styles of communities who worshipped here over time.

Reaching the monastery from Prilep requires a hiking journey of several hours through mountainous terrain. Visitors should prepare for uneven paths and bring suitable footwear and plenty of water.

Archaeological findings reveal that the site was originally home to a temple honoring the ancient deities Apollo and Artemis. The location later transformed into a Christian sanctuary, showing how religious devotion shifted and continued at the same place.
