Tachileik, Border town in eastern Shan State, Myanmar
This settlement sits on the border between Myanmar and Thailand, connected by two bridges crossing the Mae Sai River. The town spreads along the eastern bank and serves as a crossing point between both countries.
In March 2011, an earthquake measuring 6.8 shook the region and caused damage to buildings in the area. The tremors reached Chiang Mai, 100 kilometers (62 miles) away on the Thai side.
Vendors at the street market sell Thanaka, a yellowish paste made from ground bark that people apply to their skin as sun protection. Visitors find regional goods and products from neighboring countries alongside it.
The border crossing allows Thai citizens and international visitors to enter for day trips without visas. Tuk-tuks provide transport within the town.
A replica of Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda stands in town and offers different areas for religious practice. Each day of the week has its own assigned spot there.
