Hpaung Daw U Pagoda

The pagoda contains five gilded Buddha images covered in layers of gold leaf, making them unrecognizable from their original form and weighing several pounds.

King Alaungsithu transported these sacred Buddha images to Inle Lake, establishing this religious site as a center of Buddhist worship in the region.

During the annual Thadingyut festival, four Buddha statues travel across Inle Lake on a decorated barge, visiting multiple waterfront communities for 18 days.

The temple administration restricted the application of additional gold leaf to the Buddha statues in 2019 due to their increasing weight and transportation challenges.

After a barge accident in the 1960s caused one Buddha image to fall into the lake, it appeared back in the temple without human intervention.
