Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area

Khan Khentii is a protected area in Khentii Province that spans varied landscapes, from dense forests to mountain ridges over 2,700 meters high. The terrain features a mix of taiga forest and alpine zones with numerous valleys and waterways cutting through.

This zone received protected status in 1992 as part of Mongolia's effort to preserve wilderness and natural resources. This decision came from recognition that mountain landscapes and their ecosystems needed safeguarding for the future.

Burkhan Khaldun mountain within this zone holds spiritual importance and connects to Mongolia's national story in ways that remain visible in how people treat the landscape. Local practices and ceremonies here reflect long-standing reverence for the terrain.

A visit requires advance planning since the area is remote and guided tours are the best option. Weather can shift quickly, so expect conditions ranging from sunny to rough, especially in the mountain zones.

The zone is home to over 50 mammal species, including rarely seen types like the Siberian Musk Deer and Pallas's Cat. Birdwatchers can encounter large raptors here, such as the Greater Spotted Eagle, which is scarce across much of Asia.
