Burkhan Khaldun

Burkhan Khaldun is a sacred summit in the Khentii Mountains, rising 2,362 meters with a distinctive crescent shape. Rivers including the Kherlen and Onon originate from its slopes, shaping the surrounding landscape.

The mountain holds deep connections to Genghis Khan and the founding of the Mongol Empire during the 13th century. It also served as the burial site of Subutai, one of Khan's most accomplished military commanders.

Local communities view this site as sacred and conduct traditional worship ceremonies at stone cairns along specific routes. These practices remain central to how people relate to the mountain and its spiritual importance in their daily lives.

The site sits within a protected area that requires permits and access through guided walks to explore properly. Visitors should prepare for mountain conditions and bring suitable gear for hiking the established routes.

The mountain supports more than 250 bird species and around 50 mammal species adapted to the harsh steppe environment. This array of wildlife makes it a refuge for animals across Central Asia.
