Sokhondo Nature Reserve, Protected nature reserve in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia
Sokhondo Nature Reserve is a protected area in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia, centered on the Golets Sokhondo peak and covering a range of mountain environments including glacial lakes and forested slopes. The terrain rises from lower open zones through dense taiga to a rocky summit area above the tree line.
The reserve was established in 1973 to protect the mountain landscape around Sokhondo from human activity. A few years later, UNESCO designated it as a biosphere reserve, linking it to a global network of protected natural sites.
The reserve sits at the meeting point of Siberian taiga and Mongolian steppe, and walking through it makes this transition easy to notice. Within a short distance, dense conifer forest gives way to open grassy slopes more typical of Central Asia.
Access requires advance permission from the reserve administration, so planning ahead is essential before any visit. Summer is the most practical time to go, as snow covers the higher trails well into spring and can return early in autumn.
Golets Sokhondo is the highest point in the Transbaikal range, making it a geographic reference for the whole surrounding region. On its upper plateau, the marks left by old glaciers are still visible as shallow hollows and small lakes scattered across the rock.
