Onon-Balj National Park

Onon-Balj National Park covers terrain with mountains, rivers, steppes, and forests in northeastern Khentii Province. Different landscapes throughout the park offer various hiking trails and camping spots.

The protected area was established in 2000 to safeguard the natural environment of the Onon region. This decision reflected broader efforts to protect Mongolia's important landscapes.

The region connects deeply to Mongolian heritage, as it lies near the birthplace of Genghis Khan. Visitors walk through landscapes that shaped this historical figure's early life.

The park sits about 280 kilometers northeast of Ulaanbaatar and is best reached by vehicle. Visitors should prepare for basic conditions and allow time for the longer journey.

The area forms a natural border zone between Siberian conifer forests in the north and Daurian steppes in the south. This mixing allows visitors to experience two completely different ecosystems in one location.
