Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport, International airport in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport is an international airport in Ulaanbaatar that opened in 1957 and now operates as a backup facility. The site features two runways: an asphalt surface measuring 3,100 meters (10,170 feet) in length and a grass strip running 2,000 meters (6,560 feet).
This facility opened in 1957 and began serving international routes in 1958, connecting Irkutsk and Beijing using Ilyushin Il-14 aircraft. After the inauguration of the new Ulaanbaatar International Airport in 2021, it now handles training exercises and government operations.
This facility carried the name Chinggis Khaan International Airport between 2005 and 2020, honoring the 800th anniversary of Mongolian statehood. The renaming reflected how the airport served as a symbol of national identity during those years.
After 2021, this airport serves as a training ground and backup site for government flights, with most passenger traffic shifted to the new main terminal. Visitors should note that regular commercial operations no longer take place here.
In May 2023, this site hosted Mongolia's first aviation show, presenting different aircraft models to a broad audience. The event marked a new chapter in how the grounds serve as a platform for public aviation gatherings.
