Manoel Island, Military fortress island in Marsamxett Harbour, Malta.
Manoel Island is a small man-made landmass in the harbor of Gżira with a star-shaped stone fortress surrounded by water and facing the city of Valletta. The island has flat areas where modern yachts dock alongside elevated fortification walls that still stand today.
The island was originally known by a different name before a Portuguese leader of the Knights Order fortified and reshaped it between 1723 and 1733. This building period created the fortress that defines the island's appearance today.
The harbor serves as a meeting point where vessels from around the world dock and people gather to watch the sea. Today you can see sailboats alongside modern yachts and waterfront spots where locals and visitors observe the passing ships and city views.
The site is easy to view from the shoreline and can be observed from various vantage points along the harbor. Visitors should be aware that the harbor area is busy with boat traffic and they should allow time to explore the waterfront.
Underground parking was deliberately built beneath the island to keep the surface free of vehicles and protect the landscape. This makes it a rare example where modern conveniences are hidden below ground.
