Fort Manoel, Star fort on Manoel Island, Gżira, Malta
Fort Manoel is a fortification with four bastions on an island in Marsamxett Harbour, facing Valletta and the surrounding waters. Barrack courtyards, a central square and remains of the armories form the inner area of the complex, while the outer walls reach down to the waterfront.
The Order began construction in 1723 under Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena to strengthen the defense of the harbor. Work continued for several decades and ended with the completion of the walls and inner buildings during the 18th century.
The square plan merges military technique with baroque elements and shows the building style of the Knights. Visitors recognize the typical symmetry in the layout of rooms and in the interplay between defensive structures and ceremonial buildings.
The island is reached by a bridge from Gżira, and visitors can explore the outer areas and restored sections. Sturdy shoes help on the uneven ground, and the location by the open water often brings wind and sun without shade.
During World War II, bombs hit parts of the complex directly and left traces that remain visible today. The comprehensive restoration only began in 2001 and brought many of the original structures back to light.
