Ta' Ġawhar Tower, Ancient defensive tower in Safi, Malta
Ta' Ġawhar Tower is a circular defensive structure in Safi built from solid stone walls. The tower rises through multiple levels and measures approximately 3 meters thick at the walls, with an overall diameter between 14 to 16 meters.
The tower was built during the Punic Wars in the 3rd century BC and remained in use throughout the Roman period. It was destroyed in the 3rd century AD, but its ruins still reflect the solid construction of that ancient era.
This tower served as a defensive lookout protecting the coast and nearby settlements from threats. Walking around it today helps you see how such structures shaped daily life and security in ancient times.
This protected monument is managed by the Safi Local Council and is open for public visits. Visitors should allow time to examine the stonework carefully and walk around the structure to appreciate its full form.
Excavations in the 1960s uncovered rare finds including bronze vessels and a gold wire earring within the tower. Researchers also discovered heavily charred bread remains that give insight into daily life at the site.
