St Mary's Church, Gudja, Baroque parish church in Gudja, Malta
St Mary's Church is a Baroque parish church in Gudja featuring three bell towers, including a Neoclassical tower designed by William Baker and completed in 1858. The building displays characteristic features of Baroque architecture with substantial stone construction and ornate interior decoration.
Construction began in 1656 following designs by architect Tommaso Dingli. Final consecration took place on December 11, 1785.
The interior features a wooden statue of the Assumption of Mary created by Maltese artist Vincenzo Dimech. This representation of the Virgin Mary remains a central focus for community devotion and prayer.
The church functions as an active parish within the Archdiocese of Malta. Visitors should respect local customs and dress appropriately when entering this active place of worship.
The main altar features a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin created by artist Pietro Gagliardi in 1877. This work often goes overlooked despite being a fine example of religious artwork from that era.
