The base began operations in 1941 as a diversion airstrip during World War II and was formally inaugurated by Air Vice Marshal Keith Park in 1943.

The former military installation now functions as an aviation business park with two large hangars supporting commercial operations at Malta International Airport.
During World War II, RAF Safi served as one of three strategic diversion airstrips in Malta, alongside RAF Krendi and a facility on Gozo island.
