St Andrew's Parish Church

St Andrew's Parish Church, Parish church in Luqa, Malta.

St Andrew's Parish Church is a Renaissance-style place of worship in Luqa featuring Mannerist architectural elements on its exterior and Baroque decorative details throughout its interior spaces. The structure showcases a blend of these architectural influences that shape the visual character of this religious building.

Construction of this church began in 1634 when Luqa established itself as a separate parish, replacing an earlier sanctuary known since the late 1400s. The building underwent major reconstruction from 1945 to 1954 following World War II damage and was reconsecrated in 1962.

The church serves as the spiritual heart of Luqa's community and is where residents gather for religious observances and celebrations throughout the year. The annual Saint Andrew's Festa draws locals and visitors who experience the deeply rooted traditions of this parish.

Visitors can enter the church during religious services and examine the architectural details at their own pace. The best time to explore the interior is outside of service hours when you can move through the spaces without interruption.

The building was fundamentally renewed following war damage while preserving its Renaissance character, making it a rare example of restoration rather than demolition. This choice allowed the church to maintain its historical roots while being rebuilt with contemporary materials and techniques.
