South Eastern Region, Former administrative region in Malta, Mediterranean Sea
The South Eastern Region was a former administrative division of Malta in the Mediterranean, covering an area of about 36 square kilometers. It encompassed the capital Valletta, several port cities along the coast, and approximately fifteen local council districts with varying characteristics.
The region was established in 2009 as part of Malta's administrative reorganization and managed local services for over a decade. It was dissolved in 2019 when Malta restructured its governance system and reallocated its territories to new divisions.
The region contained several coastal settlements, each with its own character shaped by fishing traditions and maritime heritage. Visitors could observe how these communities maintained their connection to the sea through local practices and the architecture of their waterfront areas.
The area was easily accessible through multiple ports and ferry connections to other island groups. Visitors could explore the various town centers and waterfront promenades on foot or using public transportation.
This was the only Maltese region that fully encompassed the capital, making it central to national administration during its existence. This distinction made it the most densely populated and economically active division in the country at that time.
