Tal-Borg Battery, Artillery battery in Tarxien, Malta
Tal-Borg Battery was an artillery fortification in Tarxien featuring upper and lower gun platforms with five firing positions and reinforced structures for soldiers. The installation could accommodate roughly 230 personnel and included iron cannons, mortars, and additional artillery pieces for coastal defense.
The battery was built during the French blockade from 1798 to 1800 and formed part of a defensive chain protecting French-held positions in Marsamxett and Grand Harbour. It saw action during the early military conflicts of that period in Malta.
The battery represented Maltese military engineering expertise, supervised by engineer Michele Cachia with a garrison of 230 men during its operational period.
The site is now occupied by the Pace Grasso Stadium, situated roughly 700 meters from nearby fortifications. The location is easily accessible and provides insight into the region's historical defensive systems.
The installation fired over 400 shells at neighboring fortified towns during the early conflict years. This heavy bombardment demonstrates the critical role the site played in local military operations.
