Fort Ricasoli, Military fort in Kalkara, Malta
Fort Ricasoli is a military fortification on the north shore of Rinella Bay in Kalkara, Malta. Thick defensive walls and several bastions guard the strategic point at the entrance to Grand Harbour.
The Order of Knights began construction in 1670 and completed the work only in 1698. The facility was designed to protect the harbour entrance from Ottoman and French attacks.
The fortification takes its name from a Tuscan knight who funded the early construction work. The small chapel inside the courtyard displays altar paintings and frescoes dating back to around 1680.
The site lies about 20 minutes by bus from Valletta toward Kalkara. Access to the interior requires advance notice, as parts of the grounds remain in use.
Film crews regularly use the courtyards and walls as a backdrop for historical scenes. The site served as a setting for productions like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
